Nothing is more important to the success of NSP’s education programs than the cadre of hard-working instructors who deliver those programs. The NSP Instructor Development Programs consists of two components that provide training in course management as well as instruction, the Instructor Development course and a mentoring program.

This program includes the following courses:

  • Instructor Development Course
  • Instructor Mentoring Program
  1. Instructor Candidate:
    a. Successfully completes the Instructor Development Course.
    b. Completes the NSP Education Program Instructor Application Form.
    i. Enter Personal Data, Choose Discipline (one per form) and Training Record.
    ii. Provide additional comments in the Notes section.
    iii. Attach member profile and education record.
    c. Reviews application with Patrol Director (or Patrol Representative) and local Instructor Trainer.
    d. Gets signature/approval from the Patrol Director or person recommending the candidate.
    e. Sends application to Region Program Administrator (Instructor Candidate should retain a copy).
  1. Region Program Administrator:
    a. Reviews application.
    b. Consults with PD/PR or Division Program Supervisor to assign a mentor.
    c. Contacts mentor, and adds mentor to the candidate application.
    d. Advises Instructor Candidate of mentor selection.
  1. Mentor:
    a. Completes the Trainee and mentor sections of the Mentoring Form.
    b. Completes a Lesson Observation Form each time the Mentor observes the Candidate.
    i. Either forward it to the Instructor Trainer immediately (if final observation) or
    ii. Keep it on file until the Mentor feels the Instructor Candidate is ready for Final Observation by the Instructor Trainer
    c. Makes entry to the Candidate’s Instructor Activity Sheet each time the Instructor Candidate instructs.
    i. To be kept on file with the completed observations as a summary of subjects taught.
    d. The Mentor arranges a final observation by an Instructor Trainer.
    i. Observation by the Instructor Trainer will be scheduled and documented by the Mentor.
    ii. The Mentor may not be the Instructor Trainer performing the final observation
    e. Following a successful Final Observation, the Mentor and the Instructor Trainer will complete the mentoring form and Instructor Application and submit to the Region Program Administrator for review.
  1. Region Program Administrator:
    a. Submit a copy of the completed and signed Instructor Application and Mentoring Form to the Division Program
    Supervisor for review, signature, and submittal to NSP national office.
    b. The application and mentoring form and documentation will be kept on file at the Region level.
  1. Division Program Supervisor:
    Informs the Region Administrator, IT and Instructor Candidate that documentation has been submitted to the NSP national office.
